Sophomore Spotlight on . . . Lia Riley

In case you missed the intro with the description and main giveaway, this event is simply about checking in with 2014 debut authors who have at least one release in 2015 (AKA their sophomore year as an author).

I have an interview with Lia Riley to share with you all today! She released her debut, Upside Down, on August 5th, 2014. The next two companion books in the Off the Map series released in the same year (Sidesweeped and Inside Out). Lia's 2015 releases include Carry Me Home, Last First Kiss, Right Wrong Guy, Best Worst Mistake, Into My Arms, and With Every Breath. I think that's it. There's a lot! For this spotlight, though, I'm highlighting her debut, her most recent release, and her next book.

Enjoy the interview!
Lia Riley writes offbeat romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling XXXX with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.

A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn't mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c'mon, who doesn't love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound pretty sweet.

She and her family live in Northern California.

Hi Lia! Welcome to Reading is My Treasure.☺

Thank you for having me, excited to be on your lovely blog.

I actually haven't read any of your books yet, but I'm really excited to get to Upside Down! What are five things about your characters or writing that I should be looking forward to?

1) Bran looks damn good in a wetsuit LOL

2) Talia struggles with OCD and anxiety but deals with her problems through humor and self-deprecation
3) An angry koala plays an important role in their "meet"
4) All the locations I write about exist in real life
5) I actually studied abroad in Australia and fell in love (marrying the guy). But Off the Map is not "my" story

I'm very curious about the koala. :D

If you could spend the day with one of your characters, who would you want to hang out with the most and why?

Bran, no question. He sort of drives me crazy but I'd love to watch him in action for the day, preferably in the surf and then for a hike in the mountains. For all his natural gruffness, he'd make me laugh and probably swoon a little :)

The first book in your new series is releasing soon! What are some key similarities and differences between Last First Kiss and the Off the Map books?

I am so excited to release Last First Kiss (Brightwater #1). This is a contemporary adult romance as opposed to a New Adult so the characters and their life experiences are different. LFK is slightly more "mature" with themes and is written in third person. My Brightwater hero is also far less broody than Bran in Off the Map lol. Hopefully, you'll discover humor and quirkiness in both reads :)

Name three things you weren't expecting to experience when you became a published author.

1) Making author friends. These ladies have become vital to my day and I'd go mad without them. Romance writers are the best people.

2) Walking into Target and seeing my book on the shelf. I'm pinching myself.

3) Interacting with wonderful readers from all over the world.

I remember seeing your posts about seeing your book in Target! That's awesome. :)

What have you learned about yourself and/or your writing style since releasing your debut?

There is a quote that I love, "You are not a jar of Nutella, you can't make everyone happy." I've developed a thick skin and have learned to let opinions roll off while I write the stories that rattle around my brain.

I love that quote! It seems like one every author (every person, really) should keep in mind.

Why do you love writing NA?

I love, love, love writing characters who don't have life figured out. They are uncertain about what they want, chase the wrong dreams, or plow toward huge mistakes. These years are often when we build our adult foundation and gain a sense of self and it's an endlessly fascinating subject to explore.

I love this response! I think the fact that characters in NA don't have life figured out is one of the reasons I love reading NA.

What are you working on now?

I am working on Brightwater #3, Best Worst Mistake, that features a smoke jumper because...um...smoke jumpers are hot. I'm also doing edits on With Every Breath, my New Adult releasing December 29th and starring a sexy Scottish mountaineer.

So exciting!

Thanks for answering my questions!

Thank you for asking :)

I'm including Lia's debut as well as two of her 2015 releases!

If You Never Get Lost, You’ll Never Be Found

Twenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying good-bye to the past-and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. Everything is going according to plan until she meets a brooding surfer with hypnotic green eyes and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he moved back home to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defenses. He's never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once in a lifetime . . . or if they were meant to live a world apart.
