A Shot Of Reckless
Author: Maddie Paige
Release Date: October 14th, 2015
Publisher: Elephantine Publishing
Kobo / Kindle / B&N

Goodreads Description:
Art major, Roxy Thompson, is a ball of fun—but she's also careful to keep her walls intact when it comes to men. She likes relationships just like her coffee: light and sweet. After having her heart shattered once before, she’s determined not to ever feel that broken again.

College senior, Lake Foster, is just tempting enough to make Roxy rethink her rules of engagement. Suddenly, high-dollar shots and a no-strings night out aren't enough anymore. But Lake isn't looking for long-term. His future is set, and in four months, he intends to graduate and leave Georgia—and everything in it—behind. Luckily, short-term fun is Roxy’s specialty, and Lake can’t resist what he promises will be a fleeting taste.

Will Roxy and Lake really walk away when their time is up? They only have one shot to find out.
I discovered this book on Twitter the day before the cover was released. I saw a tweet from one of the authors asking if any bloggers wanted to review A Shot of Reckless. I contemplated raising my hand then, but decided to wait for more information (because I'm trying to be more selective with my review copies). Then I received a blog tour email not too long afterward and it felt like the book was following me. And it sounded great, so I gave it a try.☺

I'm so happy with how A Shot of Reckless turned out! It had a set up that I usually LOVE (just benefits turned into something more) as well as some nice (and sometimes ugly) surprises. It kicked off with a fun, sexy scene and ended in the most fitting way. I enjoyed reading this book so much!

I felt disconnected for first three quarters, which prevented me from being blown away from the book. The emotions just didn't feel as intense as they were made out to be. The last quarter was like a wake up call, though! I went from angry to weepy to smiley in a short amount of time. It left me with a very strong last impression.

The characters have so many flaws, and I loved it! I love flawed characters because they tend to grow (but not become perfect). A lot. They grow in leaps and bounds and it makes me so happy to see. That's what happened in A Shot of Reckless. I saw characters battle with each other, battle with themselves, battle with their decisions. They made so many mistakes along the way, but came out better because of it.

Taylor (Roxy's best friend) was one of the characters I was the most proud of at the end. She grew so much. I'm crossing my fingers for a companion book focusing on her. She deserves her own story! My other favorite supporting character was Abigail. She was the sweetest, most understanding person. She didn't have a messy relationship with any of the other characters, which was a breath of fresh air. Abigail was a stable part of the book.

Roxy was an awesome (and seriously artistic) character. I could immediately sense her direct and blunt attitude when I started reading. Her character was fiercely protective of her best friend, but didn't trust other people. She wouldn't completely move on from events from her past. It affected her relationship with Lake since she so stubbornly would not open up to him. She skirted her feelings for him often. Lake did the same thing, which just made certain bumps in their relationship more infuriating. But they both grew so much!

Their relationship was HOT. This description doesn't fit naturally into my vocabulary (I don't know why, really--I just rarely ever call things or people "hot"), so when I do use it in reviews, it means a lot. Roxy and Lake's chemistry was automatically on and there was a lot of sexual tension. It made it really easy to root them on. It also helps that they fell for each other slowly. The lust was immediate, but deeper feelings came step by step. I loved watching this happen with them and being on their journey with them. It sure was a bumpy one, but well worthwhile.

A Shot of Reckless is an impressively sexy story about making mistakes and moving past them and becoming a better person. We all make them. We can all make things work again if we try. If you want to read an NA with characters you'll feel proud of at the end, you should definitely give this one a try.

Writing duo Maddie Paige bonded over books, shirtless boys and Step Up movies. One lives for her coffee while the other prefers hot chocolate. Both lovers of romance, they tag teamed a manuscript over late nights at Steak 'n Shake. They live in Atlanta, GA and A Shot of Reckless is their debut.
